Model Policies

Patriotic Observances and Flag Displays

Pledge of Allegiance

In order to foster appreciation and respect for the flag as a symbol of our nation, the Pledge of Allegiance will be recited each morning and at assemblies and other appropriate occasions in every school. It is the responsibility of the Superintendent, through each building principal, to ensure that this policy is implemented. The building principal may determine how the Pledge will be initiated, such as by individual teachers or by intercom.

The Board recognizes that beliefs of some persons prohibit participation in the Pledge; therefore, schools shall excuse such persons from participation.

Flag Displays

The United States and Massachusetts flags are to be displayed from the school buildings of the District every school day and on appropriate occasions. Further, the American flag is to be displayed in every classroom in each public school in the District.

American History Month

All schools in the District shall observe February as American History Month. During this month, events and programs shall be organized to celebrate the significant positive impacts our nation has had on world history, science, the arts, human rights, and democracy.

Veterans Day

On or around Veterans Day, November 11 each year, the District shall invite local veterans to speak to students about their experiences serving our country.

Constitution Day

On or around Constitution Day, September 17 each year, schools will provide educational programming about the U.S Constitution.

Patriotic Plaques

As allowed by Massachusetts law, on every District school building there shall be placed in a conspicuous location a suitable plaque which shall contain the words “For God and Country”. Such plaques may be donated by veterans or civic organizations or individuals.
